Plastics are highly used mediums in the machining field and Anco precision is well equipped to deal with them. The term Nylon actually stands as designation for a whole group of synthetically made polymers or also called polyamides. These are also called thermoplastics. They were made in 1935 by a researcher working for DuPont. I t happens to be one o f the most widely used synthetic fiber today. Nylon was the polymer used successfully in production. First, it was used in toothbrush bristles in 1938 then again in 1940 with the introduction of women’s ‘nylons’. It was originally designed to be a replacement for silk because all the silk in the U.S. was being used for manufacturing parachutes during world war two. Nylon is manufactured using chemistry.
Acidic molecules are reacted with molecules made up of amine on either end. Then they are made into monomers which are then reacted to form polymer chains. It is now used in the making of parachutes, some bullet proof materials (using the Aramid forms of nylon chains) and in tires (to add strength and durability). The fibers of nylon are what can be used to make fabrics, veils, carpet, guitar strings, rope and other clothing. Solid nylon is used in making everyday hair combs. Some low stress mechanical parts (such as screws and gears) are made of solid nylon. You can even get glass-filled nylon products which add to rigidity and overall strength.
There are various characteristics of nylon which help make it so widely used and accepted. It can be very shiny and reflective or even extremely dull in appearance. The fact that it is so durable means it is used in high tension situations (such as with seatbelts and ballistic cloth).
It also led to the manufacturing of wrinkle, care-free clothing. It is a favorite among clothing enthusiast due to its resistance to fungi, animals, insects, molds, mildew and it won’t rot. An interesting property of nylon is the fact that it will not burn, but only melt under high heat situations. One well known rumor has stated that hemp and hemp products where made illegal because the U.S. government and military had invested so much money and effort into the development of the material. The U.S. military handed out numerous contracts to DuPont for the manufacturing of nylon tires, tents, ponchos and rope
At one time it was even used with high grade paper for U.S. money. By 1945 nylon fibers had accounted for twenty five percent of the material used in the clothing industry. Nylon remains a highly used material today which is why Anco precision remains a good choice for your machining needs.
