The word scientists in a broad sense, is a person or group of people who engage in an activity for the sole purpose of acquiring knowledge. An even more defined definition would state that a scientist is an individual who uses the scientific method for the pursuit of information. Scientists may be experts in more than one field of science.

Scientists are performing research all over the world as we speak so we can reach a more clear understanding of nature which includes the physical, mathematical and social aspects of our reality. This idea sets scientists apart from other researchers like the philosopher, or someone who will use logic to find a better understanding of our reality by merely focusing on thoughts and ideas. Scientists are also different from the engineer. Engineers work and study to develop machines that can serve the most practical purposes. If science is conducted towards the idea of making things more practical (such as consumer goods) then it is referred to in the science community as applied sciences.

In contrast, if research is sought after for the answers to life’s mysteries it can be called the study of natural philosophy. The word scientist is a fairly new term. It was not until the late 1800’s or early 1900’s hundreds that the term was universally accepted. Before they were called scientists they were known as men of science or philosophers of the natural world. It is believed that the first person to actually use the term (although in satire) was by a Mr. William Whewell in the 1830’s.

It was not until 1840 that Whewell actually used the term in a serious situation stating, “We need very much a name to describe a cultivator of science in general. I should incline to call him a Scientist. Thus we might say, that as an Artist is a Musician, Painter, or Poet, a Scientist is a Mathematician, Physicist, or Naturalist.” Science and technology have played a major role in the advancement of human existence. Professional scientists are held in high esteem and are well respect by people n and out of their respective fields. Without scientists who knows where the human race would be today. Science is no doubt one of the most important fields to the survival of the human race.
